I Used Claude Code for a Week — Here's What Actually Happened
This is week 7 of my “I Used It for a Week” series. I’ve tested Cursor, Kiro, Copilot, Windsurf, ChatGPT Plus, and Devin. This week: the one with no UI at all.
Claude Code is different from every other AI coding tool I’ve used. There’s no IDE plugin, no fancy UI — it’s a terminal command. You run claude in your project directory and start talking to it. It reads your files, writes code, runs commands, and iterates.
After a week of using it on real projects, I think it’s the most underrated AI coding tool out there.
How It Works
You install it globally (npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code), navigate to your project, and type claude. It drops you into an interactive session where you can ask it to do things in plain English.
The key difference: Claude Code has full access to your filesystem and terminal. It doesn’t just suggest code — it creates files, runs your test suite, reads error output, and fixes things. All with your permission (it asks before executing commands).
Day 1: First Impressions
I opened a TypeScript project and asked: “Add input validation to all POST endpoints using Zod.”
Claude Code read every route file, identified the POST handlers, generated Zod schemas that matched the existing types, added validation middleware, and updated the error handling. Then it ran the tests to make sure nothing broke.
Total time: about 3 minutes. It would’ve taken me 20.
The thing that struck me immediately — it understood the patterns in my codebase. The validation schemas matched the style of my existing code, not some generic template.
Day 2-3: Harder Tasks
I asked it to refactor a monolithic Express app into a modular structure with separate route files, shared middleware, and a proper error handler.
This is where Claude Code shines. It read the entire codebase, proposed a plan (which I could approve or modify), and then executed it file by file. It moved code, updated imports, fixed circular dependencies, and ran the test suite after each major change.
It wasn’t perfect — it missed one edge case in the error handler that only showed up in production-like conditions. But the refactoring itself was solid and saved me at least two hours.
What Blew Me Away
Codebase understanding
Claude Code reads your entire project before doing anything. It understands your patterns, your naming conventions, your architecture. When it writes new code, it looks like your code, not generic AI output.
The edit-test loop
Ask it to make a change, and it’ll run your tests afterward. If something fails, it reads the error and fixes it. This loop is incredibly productive — you describe what you want, and it iterates until the tests pass.
Multi-file refactoring
This is the killer use case. Renaming a concept across 30 files, updating an API contract, migrating from one library to another — Claude Code handles these with confidence because it can see and modify everything.
Terminal integration
It runs your actual dev tools. npm test, tsc --noEmit, eslint . — whatever you’d run, it runs. No simulated environments, no guessing about your setup.
What Frustrated Me
No IDE integration
This is the obvious one. You’re working in the terminal while your editor is open separately. There’s no inline suggestions, no Tab completion, no gutter annotations. For quick edits, I still reached for Copilot.
Token costs add up
Claude Code uses Claude’s API directly, and complex tasks can burn through tokens fast. A big refactoring session might cost $5-10 in API calls. It’s not expensive per se, but it’s less predictable than a flat monthly fee.
It’s cautious to a fault
Claude Code asks permission before almost everything. “Can I create this file?” “Can I run this command?” “Can I modify this file?” The safety is good, but after the 50th confirmation, you wish there was a “trust mode” for your own projects.
Large codebases
On a monorepo with 5,000+ files, the initial indexing takes a while and it occasionally loses context on files it read earlier. For focused work in a specific package, it’s fine. For cross-package changes, it sometimes needs reminding.
Claude Code vs Cursor vs Copilot
- Copilot: Best for line-by-line autocomplete while you’re typing. Lowest friction.
- Cursor: Best IDE experience. Tab prediction is magic. Good for medium-sized changes.
- Claude Code: Best for large refactors, multi-file changes, and tasks where you want to describe the outcome and let AI figure out the steps.
They’re complementary, not competing. My ideal setup: Cursor as my editor with Copilot for autocomplete, Claude Code for bigger tasks.
The Honest Verdict
Claude Code is the tool I reach for when the task is too big for Copilot and too tedious to do manually. It’s not for everyone — you need to be comfortable in the terminal and willing to review AI-generated changes carefully.
Best use cases:
- Refactoring — rename, restructure, migrate patterns across many files
- Adding features with clear specs — “add pagination to all list endpoints”
- Code review prep — “find potential bugs in the auth module”
- Test generation — it writes tests that actually match your testing patterns
Worst use cases:
- Quick one-line fixes — too much overhead for small changes
- Exploratory coding — when you don’t know what you want yet
- UI work — no visual feedback, can’t see what it’s building
Would I Keep Paying?
Yes. The API costs average about $50-80/month for my usage, which is reasonable for the time it saves. It’s become my go-to for any task that touches more than 3 files.
Rating: 8.5/10 — The best AI tool for serious refactoring work. The CLI-only approach is a feature, not a limitation.
