GPT-5.5-Cyber: OpenAI's Response to Anthropic's Mythos


OpenAI released GPT-5.5-Cyber on May 7 — a variant of GPT-5.5 specifically trained for cybersecurity workflows. It’s available in limited preview to vetted security teams only. No public API access.

This is a direct response to Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview, which launched a month earlier and reportedly found thousands of previously unknown vulnerabilities in production software.

What GPT-5.5-Cyber does differently

The standard GPT-5.5 has safety guardrails that make security research difficult. Ask it to analyze a vulnerability pattern, write a proof-of-concept, or reverse-engineer malware, and you’ll hit refusals.

GPT-5.5-Cyber removes those restrictions for vetted teams. OpenAI says it’s “trained to be more permissive on security-related tasks” including:

  • Vulnerability identification and triage
  • Patch validation
  • Malware analysis
  • Security workflow automation

It’s not a capability upgrade — it’s the same GPT-5.5 with different safety boundaries for authorized users.

The Mythos context

Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview launched in early April and immediately became the most discussed AI model of 2026. The key claims:

  • Found thousands of previously unknown software vulnerabilities
  • Identified “decades-old” security flaws in critical infrastructure
  • Prompted emergency meetings between Fed Chair Jerome Powell, Treasury Secretary Bessent, and major bank CEOs
  • Led to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei meeting with senior Trump administration officials
  • Access restricted to select companies through “Project Glasswing”

The model was so concerning that the Trump administration — which had committed to light-touch AI oversight — began reconsidering its approach to AI regulation.

What this means for developers

For most developers: nothing changes. GPT-5.5-Cyber is not publicly available and won’t be. It’s a specialized tool for security professionals.

For security teams: If you’re doing vulnerability research, penetration testing, or malware analysis, this is worth requesting access to. The standard models’ refusal patterns make legitimate security work frustrating.

For the industry: The pattern is clear — AI companies are creating tiered access models. General public gets safety-restricted versions. Vetted professionals get unrestricted versions. This will likely expand to other domains (medical, legal, financial).

Alternatives for developers

If you need AI assistance with security work and don’t have GPT-5.5-Cyber access:

  • DeepSeek V4 Pro — open-weight, no usage restrictions, MIT license. Won’t refuse security-related prompts.
  • Local models via Ollama — run uncensored models locally for security research with zero API restrictions.
  • Codestral / Devstral — Mistral’s coding models have lighter guardrails than OpenAI/Anthropic.

The open-source models don’t have Mythos-level capability, but they also don’t require government vetting to use.
